Cleaing via Scissor Lift Combustible Dust on Equipment Respirators for Employee Dust Exposure exceeding Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL

Dust is common to find in the rafters and ceilings of many manufacturing facilities, and on production equipment and electrical control panels. The existence of these materials are a concern because they could lead to a fire hazard.

The United States Department of Labor issued the Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program, which gives guidance to an OSHA Compliance Officer on enforcement.  Specifically, the guidance covers the National Fire Protection Association Code 654 which states immediate cleaning is warranted whenever a dust layer of 1/32 of an inch thickness accumulates over a surface area of at least 5% of the floor area of the facility or any given room.  The 5% factor should not be used if the floor area exceeds 20,000 square feet, in which case a 1,000 square foot layer is the upper limit.
